New research reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
